Amid the rampant spread of fake news on social media, many legal experts have proposed tightening penalties and raising public awareness, instead of merely dealing with the aftermath.
Speaking to Đời sống & Pháp luật (Life & Law) newspaper, Lawyer Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Anh – Director of ATA Legal Services, stated:
“In recent times, many individuals have taken advantage of social media to disseminate false information, seriously harming the reputation and dignity of other organizations and individuals. However, many people are still unaware that such behavior may be subject to heavy administrative fines or even criminal prosecution.”
She emphasized that, besides legal sanctions, it is crucial to improve legal consciousness across the community, especially among the youth—those most likely to access and spread misinformation.
“Only when the law is accompanied by greater social awareness can we effectively reduce the negative impact of fake news,” the lawyer noted.
Beyond regulations, the deciding factor lies in each citizen’s digital awareness and responsibility:
“Being cautious about misinformation is not only a means of protecting oneself from manipulation, but also a responsible act for the community. Each person’s discernment contributes to a healthy online environment where accurate information circulates and social trust is reinforced.”
